MSA AIMS and MISSION STATEMENT :-

MSA recognize that the modern Australian media in its various, rapidly changing and developing forms, has a profound and far-reaching influence on our community today.

We seek to ensure that that influence is positive and beneficial to individuals, particularly our children, and to our community as a whole.

We recognize the need to provide pathways for the community to voice concerns about the quality and content of the media our families and we are exposed to, which is NOT influenced or controlled by commercial media or other, interests. To these ends we aim to;

- foster a discriminating attitude in the community towards media and advertising messages through community education campaigns.

- educate the community about the avenues of complaint/comment on media standards and issues open to concerned individuals and to assist them to get their opinions heard by the scriptwriters, producers, advertising agents and various governing authorities responsible for producing and overseeing the media material we are exposed to.

- Relay more general community concerns and comments about media standards and regulations to relevant Government and media authorities through MSA- initiated letters, submissions, reports and petitions.

- Encourage and support moves by Government and media authorities, in response to community concerns, towards the critical assessment, improvement and appropriate regulation of all forms of media.

- Promote and establish the concept of consumer protection for children from media influences that may be harmful or inappropriate to them and unacceptable to their parents such as;

  • excessive and inappropriate portrayal of violence, drug use, suicide, sexual activity, etc in any media accessible to minors;
  •

  • inappropriate, misleading, or high pressure advertising aimed at children and families;

  • misuse of the media to promote a particular political or philosophical agenda to minors without parental support and guidence, particularly media manipulation that undermines the security of the family unit and children’s respect for parents.
