Following release of the United States Federal Trade Commission report (Sept 2000) examining aggressive target marketing violent R-rated entertainment to children, the FTC has released a 6 month follow-up report.
The Federal Trade Commission has monitored industry compliance with the movie, music & electronic game industry commitments to adhere to recommendations of the original Sept 2000 report.
Substantial commitment & compliance were recorded by the Movie and Electronic Games industries.
The music industry pledged commitment to report recommendations two days before Public release of the Sept 2000 report. However, a short while after the release, the music industry withdrew from all commitments, citing it had been targeted by several states for prosecution. The music industry still continues to aggressively target market violent R-rated material to children.
The US Senate Commerce Committee has therefore responded, by calling for a second FTC follow-up report by October 2001. This report will include information on specific industry members, and both their level and reasons for non-compliance.
To be continued......stay tuned.
